Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Chubby Rhodesian
Product Number: 002-499-0285
This chubby style of Rhodesian is one we've seen from Chris Askwith a few times over the years, yet each rendition manages to be unique and unlike previous variations. The primary reason for that is the English carver's ability to subtly alter the design's shaping cues and willingness to explore a variety of vivid color combinations. This particular offering is an incredibly stout, beefy take on the classic shape, the thick shank perfectly matching the bowl's plumpness while the saddle stem effectively uses negative space to throw even more attention toward the stummel. Here, the stummel's fashioned from morta, a type of semi-petrified oak known for its light weight and fascinating grain patterns that can be unveiled through sandblasting, with Chris taking full advantage of that quality on this example. Like many of the English artisan's pieces, I'm quite fond of the color palette on display. The jet-black stummel is paired to a hearty mount of maroon and swirling black tones before leading to the pearly white polyester saddle stem.- Jeffery Sitts
