Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Dublin
Product Number: 002-499-0286
This Dublin fits in seamlessly to Chris Askwith's portfolio of classic English shapes as well as his use of alternate mediums and striking color palettes. The bowl garners much of the visual attention in comparison to the trim shank and tapered mouthpiece. The aforementioned bowl is positioned at a strong forward cant, similar to the Belge but flares in traditional Dublin fashion. This piece also measures just under four and a half inches in length, making it the smallest Dublin we've received thus far from the English artisan. Along with being conveniently compact, it's a remarkably light weight pipe thanks in part to the stummel being carved from morta, which is semi-petrified bog oak and a pipemaking medium that's renowned for its light weight. When sandblasted, morta reveals unique grain patterns that are quite unlike anything achievable with briar and presents a satisfying tactile experience in hand. Its jet-black color is playfully contrasted by polyester stem's swirling mix of wild pink and creamy white tones.- Jeffery Sitts
