Askwith: Rusticated Lovat
Product Number: 002-499-0296
Immediately taken with the lack of weight in this piece when I initially lifted it, I double checked to make sure it was made of briar rather than balsa, and can confirm that it's briar. While the rustication is deep and craggy, it is not so surface-intrusive as to account for this light weight, and the chamber walls are thick for good insulation during combustion, so they are not a possible answer. I think it may just be one of those particularly light blocks of briar that often signals great smoking characteristics due to low incidence of leftover tannins and resins in the wood.
The Lovat is my favorite shape, and this is a particularly excellent rendition. The bowl presents just the slightest cant with its classically situated forward height rising subtly higher than on the far side. The forward heel is just right, not excessively forward-inclined, not overly curved for a sweeping heel, but exactly right for smoking efficiency and loyalty to proven classic shaping. The polyester stem is smoky and translucent, with that abrupt declination to the saddle that I particularly appreciate for this shape. While I've not placed it in my teeth (it's been challenging), and I have not yet owned an Askwith (this pipe may change that status) I'm told by people I respect that his stems are among the most comfortable anywhere, so I believe this pipe will be not only a light smoker, easy and comfortable to clench, but a dependable smoking instrument destined to elevate the smoking experiences of anyone lucky enough to acquire it.- Chuck Stanion
