Askwith: Sandblasted Nosewarmer Cutty Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-499-0313

The Cutty shape hearkens back to the style of clay pipes that were common in taverns hundreds of years ago, long before briar was discovered as a viable medium for pipe making and is a design many artisans have been exploring in the modern era. Chris Askwith here presents his own interpretation of the timeless form, presenting it in a rather compact size compared to the lengthy, willowy style associated with vintage clay versions. The Egg-like bowl is positioned at a strong forward cant and has been treated to a low-profile sandblast. The grain is subtle and reserved, dressed in an earthy-toned contrast stain while the rim is accented by a small kiss of plateau — a rather uncommon element within the English carver's portfolio. Askwith has maintained the shape's iconic heel spur, placing it directly underneath the transition while the softly bent polyester stem offers excellent balance in relation to the canted bowl. If you're searching for a modern take on one of the most legendary shapes in pipe making, Askwith has delivered a charming rendition with this piece.
