Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Chimney
Product Number: 002-499-0315
Along with Chris Askwith's creative use of vibrantly colored polyester stems and fondness for alternative materials, I'm consistently impressed with the English artisan's stylistic range and ability to produce compositions that are immediately recognizable as an Askwith product. This Chimney design is a prime example. If this interpretation was put in a line up with hundreds of other Chimney renditions, it could immediately be identified as the work of Chris Askwith. While other makers and marques work with morta, Askwith has made the material a signature aspect within his work and certainly put it to good use on this example. The towering bowl displays endless waves of tight striations all around, offering plenty of crisp texture to wrap your fingers around. Just as appealing as the stummel is the polyester mouthpiece, with its fiery yellow, red, and orange hues providing some excellent contrast against the jet-black morta. It's a pipe with personality and style, ably demonstrating Askwith's talented ability to make a standard shape unique and fascinating.- Jeffery Sitts
