Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Tomato
Product Number: 002-499-0322
Chris Askwith is a carver with a particular affinity for morta as a pipe-making medium. The English artisan often fashions designs from the dense and dark material and typically pairs them to stems of vibrantly colored polyester — another material toward which he has a propensity. Compared to his Devil Anse renditions and array of classic shapes, the Tomato isn't a design often seen in Askwith's portfolio, making this piece a rarer sight. It resembles certain pencil-shanked Rhodesians we've received from Chris — the bowls especially broad and contrasted by slender shank-and-stem arrangements. Such proportions are exhibited in this Tomato: The bowl is exceptionally squat and bulbous, and while the shank isn't pencil-thin, its abbreviated length leads into the stem's long taper for effective diminution in profile. Said stem offers a swirling mix of grassy, earthy tones for handsome contrast against the dark hue of the sandblasted morta stummel.-Truett Smith
