Askwith: Sandblasted Devil Anse
Product Number: 002-499-0332
The Devil Anse has developed a dedicated following ever since the iconic design appeared in the Hatfields & McCoys mini-series with several artisans and workshops delivering their own renditions over the years. Chris Askwith is certainly no stranger to the beloved shape as the English carver has crafted quite a few of them, with each one being unique and immediately recognizable as Askwith's work. While Chris typically fashions the beloved shape from alternative materials such as morta and olivewood, this example is more traditional, having been rendered from briar.
This piece is also an incredibly compact interpretation as it measures less than four inches in length and can easily be slipped into a pocket at a moment's notice. The plump, Egg-like bowl displays the shape's signature forward cant and houses a surprisingly deep chamber for its size. A deep, crimson-tinged stain highlights the sandblasted grain while a broad, metal band brightens the color palette before introducing the jet-black, polyester stem that tapers gracefully toward the lip button. It can be clenched effortlessly thanks to its light weight and abbreviated length, making this an ideal choice for anyone looking for a Nosewarmer or a versatile travel pipe.- Jeffery Sitts
