Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Pot
Product Number: 002-499-0336
In previous Pot renditions, we've observed Chris Askwith celebrating Castello's iconic "55" bent Pot shape, characterized by its stout proportions, gradual curve, and dramatically protruding heel. The English carver takes a different approach in this rendition. The proportions are incredibly stout still, and the overall length quite compact — as is often the case for Askwith's pipes — but the form here is arrow-straight and upright rather than forward-inclined. Such shaping lends this piece a certain tubular aesthetic, calling to mind Tom Eltang's Tubos shape but with this Askwith piece more consistently robust through its entire form. The bowl is short, the rim rising just barely above the transition, and that element lends the shank an added sense of stoutness. Regarding materials and color palette, this pipe exemplifies Chris' signature conventions: Fashioned from morta, the dark, sandblasted stummel adds further vibrancy to the pale, domed accent at the shank end and the sunny stem of polyester.-Truett Smith
