Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Bulldog
Product Number: 002-499-0346
English carver Chris Askwith has a penchant for creative takes on shape-chart standards, and this straight Bulldog displays his creativity and talent through the use of alternative materials and vibrant colors. The Bulldog shape's design cues are all represented, with a conical, albeit slightly taller and narrower bowl, twin beadlines, crisp heel, and diamond shank. However, instead of briar, Chris has chosen heat-resistant, partially petrified bog oak, also known as morta, for the stummel with a low-profile sandblast to bring out the medium's unique grain patterns. The crisp line work of the shank is continued in a polyester stem's taper, the angular nature juxtaposed with soft swirls of brilliant green and inky black that showcase Askwith's fondness for vivid color palettes. At less than 29 grams, this piece is quite lightweight for excellent clenching potential and promises the flavor-neutral smoke morta is prized for. A striking composition of materials and color in a classic profile, this pipe will liven any collection and is sure to be a conversation starter.- Joel Balyeat
