Askwith: Smooth Morta Billiard with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-499-0427
English artisan Chris Askwith began his pipe journey in 2006, when he first started smoking a pipe and realized that the tools he used as a silversmith could be used to repair pipes. In 2007, he met Paul Hubbart, the man behind Larryson pipes, who gave Askwith a chance to make some pipes from scratch. Askwith eventually invested in specialized tooling that allowed him to produce original pipes full-time, and since then, he's become a prominent figure in artisan pipe making. This Billiard showcases Askwith's unique style, which consists of modernized takes on classic Anglo-French standards.
Fashioned from morta, a petrified bog oak prized for its heat-resistance and stunning grain patterning, this piece features a tall, stocky bowl posed at the fore of an arrow-straight shank-and-stem arrangement. The bowl, shank, and stem are all harmoniously balanced within the composition, resulting in a comfortable in-hand presence and a streamlined visual appearance. A mouthpiece of black and cream horn tops off the design and adds a touch of vibrant color to the pipe's otherwise reserved palette, hearkening to late-19th century and early-20th century pipe design. A crisp sandblast dresses the stummel and highlights tight bands of grain that radiate across the bowl and provide a subtle tactile feedback for the fingers to appreciate.--Davin Hylton
