Askwith: Rusticated Nosewarmer Billiard Tobacco Pipe

While Chris Askwith generally prefers to stay within classic English shaping standards, his finishes and color palettes provide a much more modern aesthetic. This Nosewarmer Billiard, then, leans even more toward that modern milieu: Compact pipes have become increasingly popular over the years, and this example presents stocky proportions with a Group 3-sized chamber in a package barely over four inches in total length. Such dimensions allow for easy pocketability while the chamber still provides time for an adequate smoking session. The bowl is hearty and substantial, juxtaposed against a slender shank which is shorter than would be typical of a pipe of this Group size, ensuring the compact profile. The stummel is neatly rusticated and dressed in a reserved, dark stain, drawing focus to the smoothly polished rim and the vibrant, orange and indigo hues of the polyester stem. Such an extroverted burst of color is a common theme among Askwith's work, making this an excellent representation of the English carver's style.
