Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Hex Poker with Horn Stem Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-499-0439
Chris Askwith is one of England's few artisan pipe carvers, getting his start in carving by repairing and restoring estate pipes for his own use, before joining a pipe club in 2007 and meeting Paul Hubbard of Larrysson pipes. Hubbard afforded Chris the opportunity to craft his first pipe, and let Askwith use his workshop to create several more after that, before Chris kitted out his own and started his career, merging the classic with the contemporary in playful fashion. The horn stem of this Poker is quite the interesting one, playing down its more creamy tones in favor of a tapering expanse of nearly all black and inky brown, matching wonderfully with the stummel as streaks of cream and white add vibrant contrast. Shape-wise, Chris has taken an architectural approach to the timeless Poker design as a series of six panels line the towering, deep chambered bowl. Said bowl has been crafted from morta and treated to a well-executed sandblast that has brought out a captivating display of tight, uniform grain patterns across each facet. The firm lines of the panels offer a sturdy feel in hand and when paired to the crisp texture of the sandblasted finish, you have a pipe that's quite difficult to put down. But should you feel the need to place it down for a spell, you can rest assured it will sit stably on flat surfaces. Overall, it's quite the charming design from Chris that showcases his skillful line work and tasteful use of alternative materials.-John McElheny
