Askwith: Sandblasted Morta Nosewarmer Rhodesian with Briar Stem Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-499-0499

English artisan Chris Askwith began his pipe journey in 2006, when he first started smoking a pipe and realized that the tools he used as a silversmith could be used to repair pipes. In 2007, he was afforded the chance to make some of his own pipes from scratch, utilizing borrowed equipment from a fellow carver and enthusiast. Askwith eventually invested in specialized tooling that allowed him to produce original pipes full-time, and since then, he's become a prominent figure in artisan pipe making. This Rhodesian showcases Askwith's unique style, which consists of modernizing Anglo-French classics through colorful stem materials and alternative mediums.

Instead of traditional briar, this Nosewarmer Rhodesian is fashioned from morta, a semi-petrified bog oak that's prized for its stunning grain patterning and heat-resistant properties. Here, Askwith has dressed the unique medium in a crisp sandblast, which unveils rippling grain across the length of the stummel. Shape-wise, this piece boasts a broad, squat bowl that stands at the fore of a sleek, arrow-straight shank-and-stem arrangement. Said bowl trades the shape's traditional beadlines for a wrapping ridgeline that lends a touch of structure to the composition's profile. It's all topped by a tapered stem of polished briar, which offers elegant contrast to the more rugged stummel.
