Kurt Balleby: Sandblasted Bent Bulldog with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-294-0092
The gentle, sinuous curve of stem and shank as well as the pronounced underside and heel both mark this bent Bulldog as Kurt Balleby's work. This is a common approach to the form from Kurt, seemingly combining the tall taper of the Brandy shape with the crisp beadlines and diamond shank of a Bulldog. The bowl's waistline is much lower than classic renditions, allowing for the long taper toward the rim, while the diamond shank has been tightly paneled at the flanks that continue into the heel to inform the structured nature of the design's underside — a design element that Balleby often plays with in his Bulldog iterations. The low waistline and defined transition give it an exceptional in hand feel, made all the more stimulating by the subtle, Danish-style sandblast, while the shank end and rim remain smooth for a subtle contrast that doesn't take away from the striking boxwood accent just before the stem.
