Kurt Balleby: Smooth Horn
Product Number: 002-294-0099
Kurt Balleby is a soft-spoken gentleman with a wry sense of humor and enormous pipe-making talent. I'm often impressed with his line work and faceting skills, and he demonstrates those skills often. Less often, we see pipes like the Horn offered here, with which he demonstrates his equally impressive skills with smooth flow and elegant curvature rather than the more structured forms of his Bulldogs, for example.
The rim is domed and oval along the axis of the shank, its curve interrupted only by the tobacco chamber, which is circled by a diminutive bevel. There's just a bit of asymmetry at the base of the stem with an expansion ring offset and seeming to lean forward in concert with the bowl. The grain is nothing short of stunning, with tight horizontal streaks across the flanks and birdseye tightly populating the fore and aft. Even not considering the grain, though, this is a pipe that's admirable in silhouette alone, its smoothly transitioning taper from mouthpiece to rim offering attractive arcs of precise shaping. It's a composition worth considering for those who appreciate precision and an extraordinary level of craftsmanship.- Chuck Stanion
