Kurt Balleby: Sandblasted Bent Egg Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-294-0102
Kurt Balleby began making pipes in 1983 under the tutelage of Kai Nielsen. Six years later, Balleby organized a workshop in his home in Kolding, Denmark and has been making gorgeous artisanal pipes ever since. He has developed a reputation as a skilled artisan, with his work marked by a keen sense of balance, attention to detail, and refined shaping. He maintains a very low annual production rate, taking his time to make sure his work is of the utmost quality, and while we here at Smokingpipes would like to see more of his work, this bent Egg showcases the fact that the best things do come to those who wait.
The plump, voluptuous bowl of this piece possesses a rim that favors the fore a touch more than the aft, which lends the shape a gestural poise in profile. The low-slung, oval shank extends through the transition and provides the heel with firm, angular lines that offset some of the bowl's rounded qualities. A demure saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite tops off the design, making a subtle downturn for a relaxed smoking position while completing the subtle S-curve started by the shank. The stummel wears a handsome, dark sandblast that draws out some exquisite growth rings that neatly stack up the bowl, accentuating its form and providing plenty of stimulating texture to delight the fingers. Elegant, organic, and all together charming, this piece is a graceful and refined bit of craftsmanship that will make an eye-catching addition to any collector's rotation.--Davin Hylton
