Kurt Balleby: Smooth Paneled Bent Apple with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-294-0110

Kurt Balleby is among the most respected artisans in Denmark, having carved pipes since 1983, when he began working for the illustrious Preben Holm workshop. Over the decades, Balleby has honed his craft to a precise process consisting of 150 steps that ensure each pipe he produces is of the utmost quality. Due to his intense attention to detail, Balleby produces relatively few pipes each year, prizing quality over output.

This paneled bent Apple combines the semi-paneled shank of Balleby's signature Bulldog design with the supple curves of the traditional Applw form. The bowl features a plump base that rests on a soft heel, with tapering walls that culminate in a narrow, slightly domed rim. Eight equal panels characterize the bowl, with the ridges near the aft continuing through the structured shank, creating flat sides and smoothly defined curves at the top and bottom. The shank arcs gracefully upward to a flared boxwood accent at its conjunction to a bent vulcanite saddle stem, perfect for clenching. The stummel is dressed in a deep auburn finish, highlighting excellent birdseye and cross grain oriented perfectly with the panels of the bowl. This fine example of Danish craftsmanship will make a welcome addition to any pipe collection.
