Becker: Sandblasted Strawberry Wood Dublin (Four Clubs)

Product Number: 002-007-0595

Searching our archives across all makes and artisans, there aren't many virgin-finish strawberry wood pipes to be found — and nearly all of them are Beckers. Though closely related to briar, strawberry wood tends to be easy to distinguish, bearing broader and wilder grain when sandblasted (as it usually is). This itself, I've considered, may be why virgin finished examples are spare, or at least, spare outside of anyone's work but Paolo's: Paolo worked with alternative woods much more freely than other artisans, and, thereby, may have simply gained much more familiarity and confidence with them. Both would be important when making an artisanal pipe with an unstained, natural finish, and especially if the wood in question tended to be much more "open" than briar — sans any stain, there's nothing to hide even the smallest of natural flaws.
