Becker: Sandblasted Acorn (Four Clubs)
Product Number: 002-007-0755
Well on the smaller end of Federico Becker's size spectrum at just four inches in overall length, this compact Acorn is the first proper nosewarmer we've seen from the Italian carver. In addition to its diminutive size, it's incredibly light weight, coming in at 31 grams, and can easily be slipped into a pocket at a moment's notice. And while it's quite petite, Federico has imbued this piece with several signature elements that have been a staple of Becker pipes for years dating back to when his father Paolo was crafting them. The Apple-like bowl here is noticeably squatter and plumper compared to previous renditions which usually featured towering, deep-chambered bowls up front. The bowl's high-set waistline gradually tapers to the Acorn's characteristic heel spur underneath, slightly protruding from out of the bowl's lower fore and giving it that iconic Becker silhouette. The transition sits softly tucked underneath the bowl's waistline before giving way to the short round shank and abbreviated cumberland mouthpiece. Federico has treated the stummel to a crisp sandblast, unveiling ripples of wavy ring grain that emanate from the spur and travel all the way up the bowl toward the rim. And for a subtle accenting touch, Becker has chamfered the innermost portion of the rim and stained it a smoky walnut hue to match the smooth band of briar at the end of the shank.- Jeffery Sitts
