Becker: Sandblasted Apple (Four Clubs)
Product Number: 002-007-0758
Paolo Becker often uses cumberland for the stems of his pipes. The rust red and chocolate-hued material pairs beautifully with his dark-stained pieces, but it's all the more handsome and worthwhile when the Italian carver fits the material with virgin-finished pipes — the color palette when new being stark and eye-catching, but the contrast gradually decreasing with time and use as the stummel develops a patina. Such an aesthetic is and will be evident on this Apple from Becker. Shape-wise, the form exemplifies a signature stylistic cue of Federico's: a subtle, pointed heel spur below the bowl. Here, the sharp form contrasts against the rotund bowl above, the rounded flanks sandwiched between the hard lines of the heel and rim. The rest of the piece draws the eyes to this juxtaposition, as Federico has tapered the shank into the transition and extended the bottom line all the way into the heel spur. Such a balanced composition, combined with a textured sandblast and ever-darkening color palette, make this a standout piece in any collection of Italian-made artisan pipes.-Truett Smith
