Becker: Natural Sandblasted Apple (Four Clubs) Tobacco Pipe

While many of Federico Becker's Apple designs are low-slung and particularly pert of bowl, this piece from the third-generation carver presents a bit of a departure. The Italian artisan's usual crisply angular, jaunty heel remains, with the rather tall, rounded bowl displaying a strong forward cant and high, chamfered rim. Displaying less of a taper than is often seen in Federico's Apples, this stolid, plump bowl hints at a Danish influence with its supple curves. It's paired to a more lithe, gradually tapering shank and stem, the latter elegantly rendered in jet-black vulcanite. The natural stain of the stummel highlights some gorgeous growth rings that are tightly stacked, and should develop a warm patina, taking on tan, golden brown, and even pink colors as this pipe is enjoyed over time.
