Benni Jorgensen: Smooth Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-331-0351
In hand, this Apple from Benni Jørgensen is a compact form, though it projects enormous energy and personality. It's somewhat angular in profile despite its organic shaping, thanks to the precise placement of the low transition that maintains the curvature of the bowl. The rim is dramatically chamfered around the tobacco chamber, and the undercurve of shank and bowl present a long, swooping arc that contrasts with the upright posture of the bowl at the upper transition.
Two crisp and sharp ridgelines drift precisely along the center axis of the shank, and vertical grain with extraordinarily tight filaments cross those ridgelines along the sides while birdseye populates the top and bottom. The end of the shank is domed and broad, the result of the expansion of the shank from the bowl, and a single expansion ring graces the base of the stem before reducing to its saddle configuration. This is a pipe for the top shelf of anyone's display cabinet, though it will be more at home in hand and filled with a favorite tobacco.- Chuck Stanion
