Benni Jorgensen: Sandblasted Bent Apple Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-331-0364
Benni Jørgensen is a Danish pipe artisan with an easily recognizable style, honing his skill in the craft by working for the W.Ø. Larsen workshop before striking out to produce fine pipes under his own name. Now with several decades of experience fueling his creativity, his pieces command a worldwide following for their organic, gestural beauty and precise craftsmanship. While his bent Apple renditions vary in profile, some longer and more lean, others plump and curled, they all display distinct membership in the Danish school of pipe design. This example bears out that tradition with a plump, nearly spherical bowl perched, almost Cup-and-Ball-like, minus the demarcating ridgeline at the transition, on a muscular shank that ebbs lower before curling upward to meet the stem.
Cheeking at the transition is amplified by the ridgelines that run up the shank's flanks, while a lenticular shank face presents a handsome cross section, amplified by a smooth auburn finish. Apart from the shank end, the stummel is dressed in a rippling ruby-stained sandblast, rendered as a medium-depth finish to accentuate growth rings climbing the bowl while yielding a milder texture in hand than more craggy renditions. The pipe's profile describes a sinuous S-curve, as if unrolling from bit to bowl, almost making me think it could be effortlessly rolled back up again. The dark blast is contrasted well by the smooth shank face, and the precisely hand-shaped vulcanite stem flares to an elegant expansion ring before bending gracefully to support a comfortable smoking posture.- Joel Balyeat
