Bill Shalosky: Rusticated Nosewarmer Billiard (527) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-720-0143
Bill Shalosky is quite the talented pipe maker, and with his background in Fine Arts and experience in woodworking, this is no surprise. He began his journey into the world of pipe making at the Smoker's Haven workshop where he did repairs and restorations, as well as crafting their handmade pieces. In addition to this, he worked alongside Premal Chheda to make Chheda pipes, this early introduction to high quality artisan work was surely formative to his later making, and the experience it afforded him likely a deciding factor in him being taken in by BriarWorks, joining their team of pipe makers in 2015, a position he still holds while also fashioning handmade pipes such as this. This straight Billiard is a great example of his talents as, being a Nosewarmer, it must pack a lot of substance into a very compact package, something that Shalosky has taken to with aplomb here.
When I look at this pipe I can't help but see a companion piece to the Nosewarmer Brandy we received from him not too long ago, given their identical color palettes, dimpled rustications, abbreviated size, stout proportions, and cumberland stems. This piece, however, is certainly a Billiard, as the bowl features almost no taper whatsoever in its travel from heel to rim, standing proud and straight on the end of a short shank, though the shank itself does taper toward the end. The heel is firm and pronounced, and the transition is very subtly cheeked. Moreover, the stem base is recessed into the shank face, allowing the briar of the shank to wrap around, melding the stem with the stummel and further aligning this pipe with Shalosky's aforementioned Nosewarmer. Overall, the composition is quite muscular, with each element of the pipe crafted with a distinct heartiness, though it is lent a bit of levity and contrast by the saddle stem arrangement, the litheness on offer at the rear quite welcome. The stummel features a slightly craggy, low-depth rustication and dark, inky stain, contrasting quite handsomely with the cumberland stem and fostering a subdued, classic aesthetic that is sure to make this piece a beloved part of any collection or rotation.-John McElheny
