Bruno Nuttens: Handmade Smooth Twiggy (AAA) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-939-0060

Though he was born in Belgium, Bruno Nuttens calls France home, moving there after attending university to study literature. In 2012, Nuttens purchased a collection of old estate pipes with the intent to keep only one, however, he thought it would be a terrible waste to dispense with the rest. To avoid this waste, Nuttens began restoring the pipes, leading to a career as a respected and prolific pipe restorer, reviving over 7,000 pipes in the proceeding six years and becoming intimately familiar with their craftsmanship and acquiring an eye for artistic shaping. After being inducted into the Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude in 2013, Nuttens began making pipes, inspired and assisted by fellow inductee Pierre Morel. Bruno continued to restore pipes over the next few years, making pipes as a side business until 2018, when he refocused to carve them full-time. Later bolstered by instruction from Tom Eltang, Nuttens has made a name for himself as a maker of high-quality pieces which draw inspiration from the French, Danish, and German schools of carving.

Bruno Nuttens' Handmade series consists of the artisan's handcrafted pieces, allowing him to showcase his excellent shaping skills and an imaginative style. This Twiggy by Bruno Nuttens is instantly evocative of one of his primary influences: Becker. The comparison is most appropriate at the bowl, with its forward-urging momentum and sharp heel encapsulating the crisp Becker aesthetic. However, the Twiggy is one of Nuttens' signature shapes for a reason, as he incorporates his own unique design cues into the form; the fore showcases a playful bend that rises to a broad, asymmetrical, plateau-crowned rim, imbuing the geometric style with some shapely whimsy. Out back, the rounded shank is fitted to a stunning horn accent band, its creamy striations pairing elegantly with the bright hues of the auburn smooth finish on the stummel. Said finish highlights gorgeous grain, with birdseye pooling on the flanks while cross grain bisects them along the fore, aft, and underside. A warm cumberland stem here adds some contrast to the composition, while an unstained rim lends further intrigue to this piece.
