Castello's Occhio di Pernice line is made for grain hounds and birdseye lovers in particular — the series itself Italian for "partridge eye." This bent Dublin offered is an exemplary rendition, the perfectly oriented band of cross grain up the middle bisecting the piece into two flanks entirely studding in swirling whorls of birdseye. Shape-wise, it's a whimsical take on the bent Dublin, the curling transition and sinuous shank and stem calling to mind the traditional Calabash form, while the bowl flares dramatically into the rim. The warm contrast stain beautifully highlights the piece's defining grain, the color palette kept regally traditionally by the use of a jet-black stem and acrylic mount.
