Castello: Collection Aristocratica Freehand IPCPR 2019 (07.18)
Product Number: 002-386-3486
If you already have one of these, forgive the repetition, but I'm betting you don't: Only 18 were made. This Castello is big, at just under four inches high, and almost 6.5 inches long, with a beefy character that more than fills the palm. Commemorating the IPCPR Trade Show in 2019, it's a remarkable Freehand with multiple layers of interest. The color of the bowl darkens toward the rim, but gradually, beginning below the beadlines and becoming black at the plateau rim. That rim echoes the rustication of the heel and shank, both of which are craggy and deep with surface carving. A very slight bend of the stem brings a little more balance to the composition, and the jet-black acrylic matches the black of the rim for chromatic symmetry. The grain on the bowl rises from the volcanic rock aesthetic of the heel and shank in fine, angel-hair lines, straight on the left and veering into flame grain on the right. Substantial in hand and containing all the elements that make Castello so admired.- Chuck Stanion
