Castello: Collection Great Line Cherrywood (54) (1982)
Product Number: 002-386-3642
Castello is already known for aging their briar for 10 years before fashioning their normal fare of smokers — it's one of the reasons so many people are drawn to and fall in love with Castello pipes and their smoking qualities. For the Collection Great Line, though, the Italian workshop set aside these block of briar back in 1982, affording these pipes over three decades' worth of aging and curing. This particular Cherrywood offering features a towering, cylindrical, and deep-chambered bowl paired to an equally as robust, yet lithely bent shank and stem combination out back. It seamlessly combines those features to craft a magnificent pipe that not only sits sturdily but is unabashedly Italian in its execution, with the substantial bowl garnering the majority of the piece's visual attention. It definitely deserves all that recognition since the grain here is simply stunning as a gorgeous array of flame grain engulfs the bowl, emanating from its flattened base and traveling all the way up toward the plateau crowned rim. It all comes complete with its own special presentation box, making it a perfect pipe for the discerning Castello collector or aficionado of timeless Italian pipes.- Jeffery Sitts
