Castello: 'Castello' Bent Egg with Silver Cap (04.75)
Product Number: 002-386-3848
When Castello designated their shapes with number designations, this bent Egg was stamped "93." Though the Italian workshop has phased out most of their number stamps, the iconic form is still a staple within its portfolio. The rounded, bulbous bowl is followed by an extra-sinuous S-curve — a conventional design cue from Castello that lends the shank and stem, here in a mount configuration, with an especially serpentine disposition. This particular piece is dressed in the workshop's honey-blonde stain, highlighted well-oriented cross grain and seas of birdseye across the flanks. Setting this pipe apart is a hinged rim cap of sterling silver, etched with the brand's logo, effectively protecting the rim from charring as well as allowing the smoker to save a bowl for later without fear of spilling tobacco. One of only 75 pieces made for this series, this piece is serialized as number four.-Truett Smith
