Castello: Aristocratica Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-386-4183
The Aristocratica finish from Castello dates back to a period from the late 1960s to 1979, when founder Carlo Scotti made a small number of pipes to give to his dearest friends and associates. Each piece wore a darkened rim and was signed by Scotti and the recipient. The Aristocratica line celebrates that older, personal tradition, though we've not seen the fumed finish on many bent Apple designs. The rusticated rim, in addition to blending in well with the smoky look of the upper bowl, evokes the look of natural plateau. Meanwhile, tight-knit tendrils of flame grain peek out, particularly on the right flank. Shape-wise, this rather compact, bowl-centric piece sees an elongated transition and curling, crisply lined, diamond shank, at the end of which is a jet-black army mount. Topped by a complementary black stem that stretches out languidly, it downturns toward the bit, allowing this bent Apple to hang easily and comfortably from the jaw. A handsome, uniquely shaped piece whose finish is legendary, it would easily edge out others to take center stage in one's collection.-Angela Robertson
