Castello: Collection Great Line Fiammata Bent Dublin (KK)
Product Number: 002-386-4372
A hearty offering from Castello, this piece from the Italian icon bears the stampings of the Great Line, Collection, and Fiammata series', not only doubling down on its large size, but attesting to the quality of grain this pipe possesses. Despite this exemplary grain, the most arresting element of this piece is its silhouette: an unflinchingly muscular imagining of the classic bent Dublin shape that features a demurely bent stem married to a gently angled shank. On either flank of this shank and stem combination runs a ridgeline, implied from the button, to the middle of the bowl, sweeping upward with the transition and adding structure to the overall composition. The lines of the shape are quite sinuous, with a great deal of momentum behind them, thanks to the gradual expansion of the profile from button to rim, though, rather than forward, this momentum instead shoots upward, the bowl's eruption from the heel holding the majority of it. Appearing to grow naturally from the rest of the briar, the bowl flares quite dramatically to its plateau-crowned rim, giving it the look of a pipe that spawned itself into being and will continue to reach ever skyward.
Of course, this being a Fiammata graded piece, it must also have some dazzling grain, and, unsurprisingly, this pipe delivers in droves, with tight striations of straight grain framing the circumference of the bowl. These angel-hair thin wisps of flame pop out at you on the fore, as if holographic, an effect I have only seen in Claudio Cavicchi's work, making this an incredibly special example of Castello's Collection finish commending a Fiammata pipe. There are whispers of growth rings intersecting these dancing licks of grain, and the plateau adorning the asymmetric rim not only offers a lovely textural contrast, but a subtle hint at birdseye, their pinpricks poking through every now and again. The best example of birdseye, however, is present on the heel, where a densely packed basin of the swirling pattern rests, stretching back into the underside of the shank.-John McElheny
