Castello: Old Sea Rock Bent Egg (KK)
Product Number: 002-386-4486
Despite my adoration of the Danish school, my obsession with Japanese design, and my great respect for the American revival of pipe making, I will always have a soft spot for the Italian tradition of carving. This bent Egg from Castello is an excellent reason why. Corresponding to their older shape chart number of "93", this piece pairs a fairly large, ovoid bowl with a trim shank and willowy stem, bent sharply as if urging the smoker to hang it from the jaw, something it should do with ease, as it weighs less than 2 ounces, or about 47 grams. The undercurve from the military mounted stem's mount to the rim is continuous and steep, and the transition is muscular, pulling the visual weight just a bit back from the bowl, so that the eye can more easily appreciate the entirety of the stummel. The rim is finished smooth and the rest of the stummel features Castello's Old Sea Rock rustication, the craggy texture dressed in a deep walnut stain, with peaks of briar poking through as speckles of warm mahogany, matching with the rim.-John McElheny
