Castello: 'Castello' Bent Bulldog (KKKK)
Product Number: 002-386-4549
Castello's renditions of the classic Bulldog shape are almost always muscular, though there are few, I would say, that are as heartily built as this rendering is, though this thick build is tempered by its fluidity. The line from stem to rim is a nearly uninterrupted undercurve, languidly flowing to the pronounced heel and up to the dual beadlines below the rim in a display of excellent shaping. The form gradually expands as it travels to the rim as well, enhancing the supple outline of the piece, its softness tempered by the firm ridgelines on the shank and stem endemic to this shape. The bowl is very low-slung and carries the majority of the visual weight of this piece, yet the shank and stem are not dwarfed by it, imbuing the pipe with a harmonious balance. The rim is crowned with tight plateau stained a deep umber, contrasting the warm honeyed mahogany of the rest of the stummel, displaying a curling pattern of flame grain on all sides.-John McElheny
