Castello: Collection Bent Dublin (KKK) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-386-4740
This is a strikingly subdued bent Dublin from Castello, with this example taking a good deal of inspiration from the shape charts of old Anglo-French marques. When I say this I point specifically to the bowl, as, contrary to some of the more dramatically inclined offerings from the Italian workshop, this piece showcases a very gentle flare to the rim, the bowl blooming skyward from a firm, proud heel. The transition is wide, nearly a right angle, the travel of the aft side of the bowl almost perfectly mirroring the easy taper of the shank's top side, working not only to slenderize the rear portion of the pipe, but to create a sense of harmony about the overall composition. Paired to this shank is an equally svelte saddle stem, whose base is crafted to continue the aforementioned taper, before stepping down to the bit which is softly curved, turning down just a hair to offer a slightly playful character to the piece. A warm, mahogany-hued rendition of the workshop's eponymous Castello finish dresses the stummel here, revealing a lovely grain structure beneath its light gloss, with flame grain flicking up around the circumference of the bowl, culminating in a birdseye crowned rim that acts to top off the entire alluring package.-John McElheny
