Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Volcano with Boxwood (CCCC)
Product Number: 002-400-2153
Combining design elements of the Volcano and Cherrywood, this piece from Claudio Cavicchi poises a conical bowl on the end of a raised transition and slightly downturned stem. Studding the broad heel is the briar's natural plateau, adding texture in hand and profile, while also serving to orient streaks of straight and flame grain that run uninterrupted all the way to the tapered rim — having earned a prestigious "CCCC" grade. Deftly accented with a flared and domed accent of boxwood, the shaping of the ferrule is echoed by that of the stem base, the aesthetic reminiscent of cues often seen utilized by Danish artisans. Deep of chamber and hearty of proportions, this piece fits in well to Claudio's Italian neoclassic shaping style, and while it does teeter slightly when sitting, a full bowl of tobacco ought to made it more sturdy.-Truett Smith
