Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Tomato with Bocote (CCCC)
Product Number: 002-400-2154
Claudio Cavicchi presents us here with a broad-bowled, low-slung take on the Tomato. While it's a shape not normally associated with Italian pipemaking, Claudio has crafted his fair share of them over the years, each one varying in their design but always full of charm. The wide bowl expands considerably at its low-set waistline, conforms effortlessly to wrapped fingers, and is paired to a trim, elegantly bent oval shank and stem combination out back. The rim's slightly undulating disposition is a subtle, playful touch, almost unnoticeable until this piece is examined more closely, which it definitely deserves to be. Dressed in one of Claudio's brilliant, honey-blonde stains, the grain here is simply superb, designated with four of the Italian carver's prestigious "C" grades. A band of bocote wood adorns the shank end, displaying some captivating grain of its own and is notably only the second time we've seen Claudio utilize the material on one of his pipes.- Jeffery Sitts
