Claudio Cavicchi: Bologna 2019 Two Pipe Set with Claudio Albieri Leather Presentation Box (05/05)

Product Number: 002-400-2162

We all know that Italian leather is the best, because we've absorbed that information from social context. Everyone says it's the best, so we think so too. But it is, and there's little magic involved, just old-fashioned craftsmanship. In Tuscany, primarily, many different small companies involved in tanning leather specialize in one particular step in the process, then move the product to another for their own specialized and expert process. It's an old-fashioned approach, different from modern tanneries where everything is completed under one roof. Modern operations also use what's called chrome tanning, utilizing heavy metals to prepare the leather. A much slower and superior process is vegetable tanning, which takes much, much longer but produces products that look new for years and dramatically increase durability, as well as tactile and visual aesthetics.

When superior leather is sourced by an expert leather worker like Claudio Albieri, with years of experience and creative vision beyond the norm, and crafted into modern conveniences, like the astonishing leather presentation case pictured here, you have something special, something worthy of showcasing items of surpassing beauty with more intrinsic value to many than pirate gold: Claudio Cavicchi pipes.

Cavicchi is known for the remarkable grain of his pipes. He has a supernatural ability to read grain and orient a block of briar perfectly for his intended purpose. Enthusiasts have referred to him as The Briar Whisperer, The Grainmaster, and The Dastardly Dirtbag (that last term is from flummoxed, admiring competitors who can't fathom how Claudio achieves his results).

When a craftsman like Cavicchi decides to showcase special pairs of pipes, pipes beyond even his usual reach for natural beauty, he goes to his friend Albieri for proprietary presentation cases. But the case is merely an appetizer for the delectable contents within.

The first of this pair of Apples is a straight, smooth piece, quite large in hand, with a beefy shank to match the broad contours of the bowl. The grain is stunning, of course, with straight grain dominating the lower hemisphere and evolving to three-quarter grain above the waistline. All that curvature terminates at the rim, which is flat and filled with birdseye. The simple, saddle mouthpiece in jet-black interposes the negative space necessary for diverting the eye forward again to the bowl.

The second pipe is a straight sandblast perfectly matching the form and proportions of the smooth. In all black, its rippling grain undulates around the bowl in endless concentric circles of interest, and the rim is itself black and sandblasted as well, for a consistent color palette throughout. This pair of sibling pipes provide opportunities for comparing and contrasting the advantages of both finishes, and with examples of some of the finest smoking instruments available.
