Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Bent Dublin Sitter (CCCC)
Product Number: 002-400-2507
Boldly neoclassical of form, this bent Dublin for Claudio Cavicchi is everything I want from an Italian pipe, with a bowl-centric profile, prominent heel, and slightly flaring shank. It's not just a pipe, but a visual statement, and, given the prolific carver's nearly 50 years of pipe-making experience, one we all can appreciate. The bowl flares dramatically to a broad, slightly oblong rim resplendent with buffed plateau, while the heel has been flattened to showcase dense birdseye and allow the pipe to sit. A honey blond stain and smooth finish accentuate tight striations of flame grain that radiate up the bowl's sides, the excellent orientation giving a sense of organicism to the pipe. The shank lifts upward from the heel, flaring to meet three rings of elegant accents before transferring its profile to the base of the stem. The stem is jet-clack acrylic in saddle configuration, its gentle downturn contrasting nicely with the bright stummel as well as offering a comfortable smoking posture. Claudio gives pipes he is especially happy with "C" stamps, and the grain orientation and quality of this handsome devil have earned it not one but four of those Cs. A fine addition to any collection, this should be given serious attention by anyone looking for a finely-grained Italian piece for their rotation.- Joel Balyeat
