This Volcano from Italian artisan Claudio Cavicchi is a fine example of the Italian carver's more than four decades of pipe-making experience. Known for precision and his ability to intuitively shape a block of briar to show off its grain, he certainly succeeds with this rendition. A fine Sitter, thanks to its broad, flattened base, the bowl exhibits the traditional taper toward the rim, while in back the shank and saddle stem ease out from a mid-set transition for a profile reminiscent of a Poker. This piece is wearing Cavicchi's Black, ruby-tinged sandblast, revealing stunning ring grain climbing the bowl, with a trim ring of dark-red-toned briar at the shank end lending a fetching accent.
