Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Zulu (CCCC) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-400-2961
This is a rare shape from Italian artisan Claudio Cavicchi, one that we've only seen a small handful of times but that is quite the exciting take on the classic Zulu. The outline of this pipe is extremely Horn-like, though it would be a highly stylized Horn indeed, in its fluid curvature through the shank, wide transition, and consistent expansion through the bowl, though the last of these is tempered by the shank's flare toward the end, coming to a domed, ridgeline wrapped face that accepts the stem. Said stem is a stylish black acrylic taper fitted with an expansion ring just before the bit, while the base is adorned with a pale white accent band, the expansion ring and domed shank creating an ample amount of negative space to showcase this stylish addition. The bowl here rises from a sweeping heel and urges forward as it does, offering a palpable dynamism to the stummel's outline which is certainly welcome. This "CCCC" graded piece is dressed in Cavicchi's signature honey-blonde stain, revealing cross grain running through the flanks of the stummel in an excellent display of Claudio's ability to shape with the grain, while the fore and aft of the bowl are awash with dense swirls of birdseye.-John McElheny
