Well-balanced at the end of a gradually tapering shank and stem, the hearty, palm-filling bowl of this low-slung Tomato sits proudly, its round, plump base resulting in a broad, voluptuous fit in hand. The Tomato isn't a shape frequently designed by Italian pipe makers, but Claudio Cavicchi isn't just a "regular" artisan, so the shape can readily be found in his portfolio. The man almost has a sixth sense when it comes to aligning the briar so that it shows off exemplary grain when he shapes it, and this sandblasted piece reflects that talent. Dense stacks of rippling growth rings cascade down the bowl at a slight angle, adding a wealth of texture while leading the eye to the underside, where an expansive basin of blasted birdseye peppers the briar.
