Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Zulu (CCCC) Tobacco Pipe

The Zulu is an inherently dynamic shape — the stem and transition both playfully bent for a good amount of forward momentum. With this piece however, Claudio Cavicchi gave the stem an extremely subtle bend, creating a lithe profile and emphasizing the forward-gesturing nature of the curling bowl. The rim's gently undulating disposition adds a whimsical touch to the profile while the low-set transition offers ample room for the thumb to comfortably drape over. Dressed in one of Claudio's coveted honey-blonde stains and given a "CCCC" grade, there's no missing this piece in a crowded room or on a clustered pipe rack — tight striations of flame grain surround the bowl and frame the flanks of the shank, while birdseye covers the rim completely.
