Claudio Cavicchi: Smooth Dublin (Perla) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-400-3465

Claudio Cavicchi is truly a master of his craft, and his ability to coax the best possible grain out of every piece of briar will always astound me. Originally a farmer, Claudio was first inspired to make pipes after an order he placed for one with his local tobacconist took many months to fill. What resulted was not only a pipe almost exactly like the one Cavicchi was looking for, but a passion that has lasted nearly five decades, his first piece made in 1974. A world-champion slow-smoker with three titles under his belt, Claudio Cavicchi relentlessly seeks perfection in every pipe that he crafts, not only able to read grain exceptionally well, but able to engineer pipes that smoke magnificently. Among his pipes, two gradings reign above all others: the Perla and the Diamante. The Perla, while being slightly more obtainable, is still quite rare, and it is no surprise, given that Cavicchi's tenure has taught him what perfection looks like, and this Dublin certainly approaches perfection. An impressively hearty pipe, the majority of the visual weight here is taken up by the bowl, and that comes as no surprise given Cavicchi's extensive experience working within the Italian neoclassical tradition, and it's even less surprising considering the grain this bowl displays. Said bowl stands atop a slightly rounded heel and grows strikingly thick walls that flare dramatically out toward a broad, plateau-crowned rim, this rim overlooking a capacious chamber with plenty of room for an all-day smoke. The transition out back is wide and gives way to a sleek, tapering shank that diminishes as it reaches toward a saddle stem of jet-black acrylic, one that takes on an extremely subtle downward angle, though not one that alters its smoking posture in any significant way. Afforded a striking bit of dynamic momentum thanks to the bowl's impressive forward cant, this pipe showcases the Perla series' iconic stain, dressing the stummel in rich, ruby tones. Said dressing reveals a dense pattern of wrapping flame grain through the flanks and around the bowl, while the underside is peppered with birdseye.
