Claudio Cavicchi: Brown Smooth Zulu Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-400-3489

Claudio Cavicchi is truly a master of his craft, and his ability to coax the best possible grain out of every piece of briar will always astound me. Originally a farmer, Claudio was first inspired to make pipes after an order he placed for one with his local tobacconist took many months to fill. What resulted was not only a pipe almost exactly like the one Cavicchi was looking for, but a passion that has lasted nearly five decades, his first piece made in 1974. A world-champion slow-smoker with three titles under his belt, Claudio Cavicchi relentlessly seeks perfection in every pipe that he crafts, not only able to read grain exceptionally well, but able to engineer pipes that smoke magnificently. The Zulu is an inherently dynamic shape — the stem and transition both playfully bent for a good amount of forward momentum. With this piece however, Claudio Cavicchi has granted the heel a more angular, firm look, creating a muscular profile and emphasizing the forward-gesturing nature of the curling bowl. The rim is crowned with plateau for a bit of organic styling, while the wide transition offers ample room for the thumb to comfortably drape over. Dressed in one of Claudio's deep, chestnut stains, there's no missing this piece in a crowded room or on a clustered pipe rack — tight striations of flame grain surround the bowl and frame the flanks of the shank, while birdseye covers the underside.
