About This Pipe
Each time I smoke my own Cavicchi pipe I find myself becoming more enamored with the quality of the smokes it provides me, and, likewise, each time I find myself describing any of his exemplary pieces, regardless of their finish, I am even further enchanted by his expert shaping and transcendent grain coaxing abilities. Among his pipes, two gradings reign above all others: the Perla and the Diamante. The Perla, while being slightly more obtainable, is still quite rare, and it is no surprise, given that Cavicchi is, above all else, a perfectionist, and his nearly five decades of experience have taught him what perfection looks like, and this bent Dublin certainly approaches perfection. This pipe features bold, bowl-centric, Italian neoclassical proportions, with the bowl itself dominating the visual weight of the composition. As it is looked at, however, I find that the stretched shank and trim tapered stem, while much more lithe and low-profile, in comparison, offer a counterbalance, anchoring the visual weight more toward the transition and giving the pipe a more unified feel. Said shank features a compressed oval shape that ebbs out of the low-set transition as it moves into the mouthpiece. The heel which the dramatically flared bowl sits upon is quite firm and solid, supporting the bowl's heft easily and lending a feeling of solidity to this pipe. The bowl is completely wrapped with straight and flame grain, while the broad rim is coated entirely in plateau. The rich brown finish highlights these excellent features, lending the pipe a dignified air that's hard to match.
