Jess Chonowitsch: Sandblasted Potato Sack with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-367-0081
The name alone presents a challenge. A potato sack is typically used as a descriptor for shapeless, dull, non-distinct items that tend toward characteristics in polar opposition to what we think of pipes as being. However, this shape is from a series of designs by Sixten Ivarsson, and since Jess worked with Ivarsson, there's little doubt that he is interpreting those original designs. This bowl is indeed in the shape of a potato sack. Sandblasted and cross-grained, the far side of the bowl is all birdseye, with vertical growth rings evident on the flanks. Three knuckles of bamboo lead us to the mouthpiece, in saddle configuration and hand-cut to perfection. This pipe makes a statement, clearly: Even a Potato Sack can be stunningly engaging when prepared in the hands of a true craftsman.
