Jess Chonowitsch: Smooth Bent Dublin Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-367-0012
If ever a pipe with separate components appeared to be a single, unified piece, this is it. I'm unable to define how Jess does it, but the lines and shaping here are both detailed and minimalist. Everything here is pipe, with no unnecessary protuberances, bands or ridges; everything included is essential to the shape, capitalizing on the grain of the block to accentuate and enhance the pipe's aspect. Most important, though, is that the wide curve of the base and echoing curve of the top of the transition work together geometrically to provide unity. The stem, a saddle configuration, throws the visual weight toward the bowl while still being integral. And the grain works toward that same unity, with stunning birdseye rim and heel, and straight vertical grain circumnavigating the bowl. For such a seemingly simple piece, it's an extravaganza of detail.
