Chris Asteriou: Sandblasted Tomato with Bamboo and Boxwood (11/16)
Product Number: 002-540-0054
Asteriou, like the other young Greeks, broke onto the scene by merit of great executions of the classics. And if pipemaking were just about money, I suppose the lot of them could have just stuck with that — but they haven't. Chris like, his fellow twenty-to-thirty-something pipemaking Hellenes, has used skill at creating classic shapes as a foundation to work in more modern and eclectic shapes. As such I wasn't the least bit surprised to see that this latest Asteriou batch consisted entirely of pipes with a more contemporary design basis: a smooth and active Strawberry, a demi-Churchwarden that appears to have more than a bit of Sixten's Peewit in its heritage, and, here, a sleek and low-slung Tomato supported by stout knuckles of bamboo — a shape that I'd wager took a good share of inspiration from the works of Japanese artisans.
