Chris Asteriou: Smooth Billiard with Bamboo (16/17)
Product Number: 002-540-0066
This neat little Billiard sports three tight knuckles worth of bamboo, and specifically bamboo with quite a fair variation in shade across its surface. It used to be that when it came to artisanal pipes bamboo coloration came down to two types: uniformly pale bamboo and "black" bamboo, the latter covering both that bamboo which was naturally a very dark brown, and bamboo that was finished or lacquered to produce a dark-brown-to-jet-black coloration.
Artisans like Chris selecting bamboo with this more variable shading is something I've only really noticed catching on quite recently. Chris, like a handful of other artisans, uses it to great effect, allowing the bamboo and the pipe as a whole a more natural look and presence — even when you're well aware that the particular piece of bamboo used was chosen as part of a very selective process, controlling for length, knuckle spacing, and even the manner in which the bamboo's shading varies. (Chris, for example, clearly wanted to show off the darker shading here, orienting the bamboo with its palest and most uniform area at the underside.)
