Chris Asteriou: Smooth Bent Egg with Horn and Silver (47/19)
Product Number: 002-540-0110
This bent Egg from Chris Asteriou combines elements of his iconic Strawberry and Acorn renditions with that of the classic Egg shape. The bowl itself is quite classically the latter — bulbous and rounded, tapering toward both the rim and heel — however, the shank extends through the lower bowl into a Strawberry/Acorn-like heel spur, the organically inclined bowl seeming to inflate directly from out of the top of the shank, accentuated even more by the slight flare of the transition. Out back, then, the shank and stem flow in a similar style to that of Asteriou's previously-seen Acorn numbers, and like many of them, this one also features a mount of genuine horn (bamboo also being an oft-seen choice by the Greek carver). This is no ordinary ferrule of horn though: It flares gradually toward the end, terminating in a domed cap of sterling silver that's inlaid with a reinforcing ring of brass just around the mortise. It's a combination we've never before seen from Chris, juxtaposing the organic aesthetic of horn with the crisp refinedness of flashy silver. Absolutely awe-inspiring work, and the grain orientation couldn't be more perfect as bands of cross grain down the flanks give way to a fore that's saturated in dense birdseye.-Truett Smith
